Neuschwanstein Castle is a nineteenth-century palace on a rugged hill in southwest Bavaria, Germany. The palace was commissioned by King Ludwig II of Bavaria as a private retreat and as a homage to Richard Wagner the opera composer. It was opened to the public immediately after his death in 1886 and since then more than 61 million people have visited the castle.
